Newborn Baby Essentials

Babies grow very quickly in the first few months after birth. Especially ages 0-1 is when they grow the fastest. Before you can use so many things you have bought, you notice that they’ve already grown out of them. So, buying only the essentials is more than enough. At the end of the book, you can find the brands whose products I’ve used and liked, so you can take a look at that if you need. On the following pages, you can find lists for some basic newborn essentials.

Bathtub

BATHING SPONGE

I had one that was made of fabric and I’ve only used it twice. However, it is useful for the first few times you bathe your baby.

PLASTIC BATH PITCHER

As a shower head can hurt the baby’s skin, you’ll need a pitcher for the first few times you wash your baby.

Bucket

NATURAL SPONGE

Natural sea sponges are best.

SOAP & SHAMPOO

Choose from plant-based, fragrance-free products.

BABY OIL

Choose from plant-based, fragrance-free products or use olive oil.

COTTON PADS TO WIPE

You don’t need anything other than cotton pads and water to wipe the baby while changing its diaper. I’ve used big cotton pads for the first 4 months, then I’ve started washing her.

DIAPER RASH CREAM

Choose from plant-based, fragrance-free products or use olive oil.

DIAPER CHANGING PAD

Buy a few spare ones.

WET WIPES

Choose water-based and fragrance-free wipes that are suitable for newborns. Wait to see if it causes an allergic reaction after first use, then continue using if it’s all good.

EYE CLEANING SOLUTION

A serum that is used physiologically and sold at pharmacies.

NOSE CLEANING EQUIPMENT

I haven’t used one but I’ve seen people use them and they were happy with it.

NAIL CLIPPERS AND NAIL FILE

Regular clippers are easier to use, I wasn’t able to use the ones that resemble scissors.

COTTON SWABS

I haven’t used these. I just covered my pinky finger with a soft cloth and cleaned out the baby’s ears with it.

HAIR BRUSH

Helps with cradle cap, which is almost always seen on babies in the first few months.

THERMOMETER

I had a forehead thermometer. You can also get those that take the temperature from the armpits or the ears.

LAUNDRY DETERGENT

You can choose from organic detergents or opt for granulated hand soap.

MULTI-PURPOSE CLEANING SOLUTION

Made with organic ingredients to use for the baby’s room.

DIAPERS

Choose fragrance-free diapers.

HOT WATER BOTTLE

You can put small hot water bottles on the baby’s abdomen when it’s gassy or use it to warm up the baby’s bed before you put it to sleep.

Hospital

NIGHTGOWN

Have 2 or 3 with you. Button-down models are easier for breastfeeding. Nightgowns are easier for the nurses to do check ups on your genitals.

SLIPPERS

WET WIPES

COTTON HANDKERCHIEFS

BABY BLANKET

LARGE UNDERWEAR

Have 5 or 6 pieces with you. Large sanitary pads are used for bleeding after vag-inal birth.

TOILETRY BAG

Shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer and lip balm.

CLEAN OUTFIT

To wear on your way out of the hospital.

NURSING BRA:

NURSING BRA

Having a few pieces of the models that combine a bra and a shirt which you can wear as a top is really helpful.

BREAST PUMP

Don’t buy a pump. It’s better to rent one if you need it.

NURSING PILLOW

If you don’t have a nursing pillow, a regular pillow works just as well.

NIPPLE SHIELDS

Better to not use them unless you absolutely need to, your breastmilk helps with healing the nipples. You can use shields temporarily if your nipples hurt.

NIPPLE CREAM

I feel like the nipples heal faster and improve more easily if you don’t use creams. In any case, I’ve shared the brand of cream I’ve used a couple of times, at the end of the book.

BREAST PADS

They’re used for when you leak out of your breasts. I’ve used this a lot.

BREAST MILK STORAGE BAGS

Necessary and useful to store the milk you pump in the freezer.

PACIFIER

Better to choose those made from natural materials. You can try a few different pacifiers from various brands, as there is no telling what the baby will like. We haven’t used one.

BABY BOTTLE

Glass bottles are preferable. Bottles with a venting system to prevent gas are better.

BOTTLE BRUSH

You can buy one thin and one thicker brush and use them to clean the baby bottles.

BABY BIBS

It’s a good idea to get a few spare, soft cloth bibs for the first 6 months.

Baby Room & Textiles

BED

You might not use it at first. Your baby will probably sleep next to you or in a baby cot in your room.

WARDROBE

A dresser could be sufficient at first, but later you’ll need to add a wardrobe.

CHANGING TABLE

You can use the top of the dresser or buy a separate changing table with shelves below.

DIAPER PAIL

You could go for models with lids on top to prevent odors.

BABY BOUNCER

There are so many models out there and what’s important is that you get one where the baby’s waist rests comfortably and where you can hang a toy at the front. Most bouncers will not be used until the third month.

PILLOW

Pillows are not used for the first year.

SHEETS

For safety reasons, only fitted sheets are used for the first year.

BLANKETS

For safety reasons, only fitted sheets are used for the first year. Not used for the first year.

SLEEPING BAG

Very important, the best way for the baby to sleep safely and not get cold. Models with snaps at the shoulders and zipped skirts are very useful. Buying a few pieces is a good idea, and you’ll need a bigger size after 6 months.

COMFORTER

Not used for the first year.

Clothing

BODYSUIT

ROMPER

PANTS

SOCKS

HAT

CARDIGAN

VEST

MITTENS

COAT

SWEATER

Bathing & Baby Care

STROLLER

To use with a car seat at first. The size of the wheels, the weight, and the ease of set up is important. This is a purchase you really need to do your research on.

BABY BOUNCER

I think this is the product that helps the most to have at home. There are so many dif-ferent models, such as auto-bouncers, musical models, etc.

CAR SEAT

Must be compatible with the stroller. Many hospitals require you to have a car seat upon check-out. It’s important to compare products from different brands.

BABY CARRIER

Important to get a sturdy one from a safe brand. I’ve used mine so much. Some prefer to carry the baby with sling or wraps.

HIGH CHAIR

Not urgent at all, only necessary once the baby can sit.

STERILIZER

I’ve used mine so much, but if you don’t have one you can boil pacifiers and baby bottles in a pot with a strainer.

BOTTLE WARMER

Used to warm up the pumped and bottled breast milk.
